Setting up product referral is a short wizard from the Campaigns page. A non-incentivised campaign takes two steps; an incentivised one takes four.

Before You Start

  • You need the right role. Only Admin and Marketing users can set up product referral.
  • Your product pages need the tag. The campaign controls what happens on your product pages, but the product referral tag has to be installed for anything to happen there. On Shopify, this is the Share Product theme app block.
  • One campaign per language. If the language you want already has a product referral campaign, the wizard sends you to it instead. See campaign modes for how to add an incentive to an existing campaign.

Create the Campaign

1

Open the setup wizard

Go to Campaigns > Product referral campaigns and click Create campaign. The Set up product referral dialog opens.
2

Choose the mode

The wizard opens on the mode step.
  • Non-incentivised. Track how customers share products and the orders their shares drive. No reward is offered. This is the default.
  • With an incentive. Reward referred customers when they buy a shared product, with a holdout so you can measure the uplift.
Despite that wording, the offer is shown and the code issued as soon as a referred visitor lands on the shared product page, not after they buy. See when the offer is shown.

3

Choose the language

Pick the language the campaign will run in. One product referral campaign runs per language. If that language already has a product referral campaign, an alert explains it and the button changes to Go to campaign. You cannot create a second one. If you chose With an incentive and the existing campaign is non-incentivised, the alert tells you to add the incentive to it as a new version instead. For a non-incentivised campaign, click Create campaign here. The wizard is finished, and you land in the campaign editor on a fresh draft version. For an incentivised campaign, click Next to continue to the reward.

4

Set the reward (incentivised only)

Choose the reward shown to the referred customer when they land on a shared product page. This is a single reward with no counterpart: there is no referrer reward in product referral. The code is issued as soon as a qualifying visitor arrives, so pick something they can act on during that visit. See when the offer is shown.
Avoid rewards with a cash value. Every qualifying visitor outside the holdout is issued a code the moment they land on the shared product page, whether or not they go on to buy. A gift card or third-party voucher is worth something in its own right, so it hands real value to people who never place an order.Keep to rewards that are only worth something against an order: an amount or percent off, free delivery, or a free gift with purchase. See Rewards for the full list of reward types.
You can create a new reward or select one you already have. The currency follows the language you chose. Click Next.

5

Set the holdout (incentivised only)

Enter the holdout (control) split: the share of visitors held back from the incentive, as a whole number between 1 and 99. The default is 50%.A higher holdout gives you a cleaner read on the incentive’s impact but shows the reward to fewer people. See the holdout for how to choose.Click Set up incentive.

What Gets Created

The wizard creates a complete campaign in one go: the campaign itself, its first version, the offer, and, for an incentivised campaign, the reward and the control group at the split you chose. You land straight in the campaign editor on that version, marked as a fresh draft. The campaign is a draft. Nothing changes on your product pages until you launch it.

Launch It

Product referral campaigns follow the same lifecycle as brand referral campaigns: edit the draft, then launch the version. See launch a version.
Until a product referral campaign is live for a language, the tag will not inject a share link or add the mm_rf parameter on product pages in that language, so shares in that market are not attributed. A draft you never launch tracks nothing.
The campaign appears on the Product referral campaigns page, with its own columns: Campaign, Status, Locale, Incentive, Voucher health and Preview. Incentive badges the current version’s mode.

After Launch

  • Adjust the share link. The Sharing node controls whether a link appears on your product pages and how it looks. See the share link.
  • Adjust tracking. URL hash tracking and UTM parameters are set per campaign, from Campaign settings at the top of the campaign page. See tracking settings.
  • Add an incentive later. Create a new version and pick Incentivised as the version type, then launch it. See campaign modes.
Live versions are read-only, as they are for brand referral. To change anything, create a new draft version, edit it, and launch it.
